Looking for an isolation relay?

 

Replaces GM part # 10022620 & GM part #10038949

 

Replaces both the early and late design 82-86 Firebird and Trans Am isolation relay. Internally both GM part #10022620 isolation relays and GM part #10038949 isolation relays are the same.

 

 

You will probably not find a new isolation relay. You might find a good used one. I have had many requests to make a reproduction of this GM 10022620 and 10038949 isolation relay.

 

They come with wires. You cut off the old plugs to your original isolation relay and you butt splice them to the factory wires and use adhesive shrink tube (included in the kit) to make water proof connections. I might look at selling them with new plugs on them. You would still need to cut your old plugs off and butt splice on the new plugs, but it would be replaceable. IMO with a new one like this you should never need to replace it.

 

Potted in a black ABS plastic box and close to the size of the original.

 

They have a tab with a hole to mount them in the stock location with the original screw. The wires exit on the bottom.

 

The wires coming out of them are in the correct colors.  You cut off the old plugs on your wiring harness and butt splice them to the factory harness wires and use adhesive lined shrink tube to make a waterproof connection.

The kit includes adhesive lined shrink tube, butt splices and solder:

 

 After you crimp on the butt splices solder the butt splices to make a very durable connection. Do not forget to put the shrink tube pieces on each wire before you crimp the butt splices!

Another option:

If you are having problems with your headlights not working you could consider upgrading to my complete all in one relay kit. My upgrade controller kit puts all three relays in one potted waterproof box. It eliminates the old GM plug in connectors.

Helpful hint:

I have an 84 Firebird with a headlamp that started to get lazy. It would go up but not always go down. About 3 years ago a mechanic friend cut open the relay and soldered in a diode . The headlight is now acting up and I am interested in your solution to the no longer available relay.

Possible reasons:

Biggest problem is degraded connections starting at the battery and ending at the brushes. A little loss happens at every old connection. Find the grounds, clean them up. Put some grease over them. Silicone grease is the best but any grease is OK. My new relay eliminates several connections in the OEM isolation relay plug. Also check the brushes. It is not common but ocassionally one can fall off the arm in the motor. I have replacement brushes available.

 

 

 

Early model (82-83) note:

It appears that the 82-83 Firebirds used some different colors in the wiring harness going to the isolation relay. To install this isolation relay into an early Firebird it connects like this:

The orange wire in the factory GM wiring harness goes to the solid blue wire in my isolation relay

The white wire with a black tracer in the factory GM wiring harness goes to the blue with a white tracer wire in my isolation relay.

The rest of the wires match in color. Pink to pink, black to black, yellow to yellow and solid white to solid white.
