Audi dust and insect proofing headlight kit

True dust filtering air filter foam.

A kit that is easy to install to keep dust and insects out of your Audi headlights.

Audi's fixed this problem in the later years.

How to determine if your Audi has the old "open to the atmosphere" design that allows dust and insects into the headlights: Look thru your grill. On each side you will find a black rubber tube. If the tube has nothing on the ends it is the "early open to the atmosphere" type.

Do you own an Audi that has dust and even dead insects inside them?

My story:

My wife's 2010 A5 sits outside and the headlights were getting very shabby from UV damage. Long before they started to show this UV damage they have gotten dust inside them plus a few bugs crawled in and died inside them. My wife just hates the dust and the dead insects in them. I can't blame her.

My 2006 Mercedes S500 still has perfectly clean/sparkly headlights. I park it in the garage so there has been no UV damage to them but the insides of my headlight housings are still perfectly dust free and still look like new. She always comments on how nice my headlights look compared to hers especially because they are still 100% dust free inside.

My wife's A5 still looks excellent almost like it just came off the assemble line except for the degraded headlights.

I bought a pair new OEM Valeo headlights several months ago. Expensive but a must have. Ebay had the best price. We plan on keeping it for several more years as long as it still looks and drives very good. I did not want the new headlights to get dusty and have dead insects in them.  :(

I had this huge anxiety since I bought these new housings several months ago that these new housings will again, over time, get dusty inside and a few insects might also get inside them. Dust and insects in them makes for a terribly disgusting appearance. So I modified them to be dust and insect free.

Remove the plastic cover between the headlights.

Unplug the wires to the headlight assemblies and remove the bolts holding the headlight assemblies in. I found this to be fairly easy on my wife's A5. If need be do a search on Utube on how to remove the headlights on your year and model Audi.

On each side there will be a rubber coupling that is the air intake port. Do not put a piece of foam in this port on the headlight assemblies.

I blew into all the openings on the headlight assemblies to locate all that were open. Cut the foam included in the kit to match these openings and insert these foam pieces into these openings. Remember to not add foam to the one port on each headlight assembly that is the air intake port.

I then mixed up some epoxy and put some small dabs on to make sure they never blew out.

You can now reinstall the headlight assemblies.

Locate the black rubber tubes on each side in front of the radiator. They may or may not have a piece of foam in them. You can remove it if you want to. They do not do a very good job of keeping the dust out. Push the new filters into these rubber tubes and let them hang.

Reinstall the plastic shroud and you now have dust and insect proof headlight assemblies!

PS: One can sand and polish old headlights like these. But once polished they will tend to haze over quicker because you have now removed the UV coating on them. But they can be polished again and again.
