Solid steel transmission mounts
For many years I have tried to come up with replacement rubber transmission mounts. I have wanted to make them so one can burn the rubber off the old brackets and bolt in new rubber mounts after drilling holes. I'm still pondering that and it may happen one day.
The problem today is aftermarket rubber transmission mounts seem to be very low quality. The bond from the steel to the rubber is very low quality. The thickness of the steel is also thinner than OEM GM mounts and the fit is not very good, especially on the rear steel mount. A few years ago I bought a few pair of aftermarket rubber transmission mounts from differnt suppliers to look at them. They all came in different named boxes but inside each box was a mount that looked like all the other mounts. Seems they are all made by one manufacturer no matter who you buy them from. So in my opinion there is no better or worse aftermarket rubber trans mounts out there. It does not seem to matter which one you buy. They seem to be all from one manufactuer.
This gave me the idea to make solid steel brackets. My first idea was to make solid aluminum pieces. But that would not work well because one can not depend on the angles of the mounts to match the angles of the face of the steel brackets.
So in my opinion they have to pivot.
You take your old rubber transmission mounts and burn off the rubber from the bases. My new steel mount is then welded to the old steel base.
Tip: If you are using aftermarket steel bases check them in the cradle first and even after you weld them. You should be able to bend the steel bases to make them fit better. This mostly applies to the rear base.
So how to use them: Some with V-8's mount the motor solid to the cradle. These will work very well for those with V-8's. You should still have some kind of a dog bone type mount from the engine to the cradle or body. I would not depend on just the motor and trans mounts when doing a V-8 conversion.
Those with V-6's: In my opinion aftermarket rubber motor mounts are pretty good. The rubber is in a cupped area and probably fairly durable. So in my opinion you can use an aftermarket rubber motor mount, solid steel transmission mounts and a solid steel dog bone:

Although not that obvious in the picture the steel bases on the OEM GM mounts (right) are thicker than the aftermarket mounts. If you have or can find old OEM GM trans mounts you will have better fitting and thicker steel bases to work with.
