1997-2004 C5 Corvette headlight gear kits $45.75
by Thomas Cherry Date Added: Thursday 03 July, 2014
I installed a kit in each motor several years ago. Worked great and there is NO NOISE or Ratchetting like when the original plastic gear was stripped and slipping. HOWEVER, I have had intermittent issues several times since then. The RIGHT headlight would not function. The malfunction was ALWAYS (and has been since then) on OPENING. When I had the original problem, it was the RIGHT one that was making the noise and would not open.

I understand the circuit in that there is a current limiting control so that if the motor is in a bind or the linkage, that it will shut down. The headlight WILL be on, but not open. Tried all sorts of lubricants. NADA. Finally reasoned that if the motor had overtraveled in the CLOSING motion and severely impacted the bumper and/or the bumper was worn that you had an "over travel or over camming" situation. Many of the industrial C Frame presses will actually toggle OVER CENTER...that way they are stronger and have more capacity.

I had tried a variety of troubleshooting steps and read all that I could. The BUMPER seemed to be the culprit. THEN the really BAD NEWS. GM no longer makes or stocks the bumpers....BUMMER.

I had reversed them. Found that the bumper was gone...split and fallen off.

I stole a bumper from the top and put it on. SOME relief, but issues. I ordered a set (8 total) bumpers from the OTHER guys in Florida. I had read that their aftermarket replacements were of the wrong hardness (Durometer) and also the slot was undersized. YEP....I had to do a little whittling inside. SO, I pulled off my OEM Bumpers and saved them.

Kept corresponding with Rodney. He has NEW bumpers or stops. Ordered them last year and put in my LAST good GM Bumper. Realize that this is a 2000 Vette. Even garaged and babied, you get a lot of engine heat up front and plastic will oxidize and deteriorate with age and heat.

Last weekend the LEFT one would not function....and the RIGHT one was sympathetic and stayed closed. Do NOT know if there was a higher voltage (actually current) and my control is intermittent or not. BUT, the cheapest fix was to replace the bumpers. BOTH were severely nicked or damaged. Put in all new (8) bumpers. They fit properly. They have a different feel from Brand X. I THINK (HOPE) this will solve the problem.

If they last for several years....YEA!. Gonna order spares after a few months.

Would have issues and swap out a
