5 Speed Shifter Rebuild Kits $34.95
by Andrew Harrelson Date Added: Sunday 09 October, 2016
In short, if you have a fiero get this kit. The quality of the components is top notch. There is almost no play at all anymore and what play there is comes from other parts. I installed this along with the replacement cables and the select arm rebuild kit. Night and day difference and I love shifting in the fiero now. The shifter now feels like it is directly attached to the transmission underneath the console. Most if not all of the remaining play is in the transmission itself. I don't know if all getrags are the same or if mine is just worn and old, but when moving the select and shift arms directly on the transmission there is a bit of play on the shift arm. The overall feel when directly shifting/selecting by hand is not very "positive" so one should not expect these kits to make shifting feel perfect. What it does is exactly what it was designed for, and that is removing slop, improving feel, and making the connection as direct and mechanical as possible. It does its intended job perfectly and I am completely satisfied with the purchase. As an engineering major, there is nothing quite like replacing worn old plastic parts with solid metal ones. Similarly, I loved the improved feel Rodneys solid metal sway bar end links gave to the cars handling. So basically dont expect your car to shift like a Porsche or whatever but do expect a vastly improved mechanical feel. I guess you can say the kit is so good it reveals all the imperfections in the transmission.

I'd love to see Rodney make a new select arm to replace the stock plastic one. Even though there is no play on the pivot shaft nor the little ball (which was replaced with a solid cylinder in this kit, very cool), I believe there is a bit of play where the cable itself attaches to the arm on the little pin. same goes for the shift cable on the shifter arm. Additionally, I've broken one of the stock plastic arms before, so a stronger one would be nice. Even without a new arm, some custom sleeves over these pins might would fix this play.

Additionally, I'd like to see Rodney make a new sleeve or spacer for the shifters through bolt. There seems to be a bit of play here aswell.

Other than these, I do not see how one could improve the shift feel any more without replacing the transmission itself
