82-86 Firebird Headlight Motor Controller Installation Guide $0.00

Installation Guide 1982-1986 Pontiac Firebird

This is a step by step guide to installing my new 82-86 Firebird headlight motor electrical control system. You can no longer find new isolation relays. I looked at having some made and it was near impossible to do so if you wanted to retain the factory connectors. This is a kit to replace the relays and the isolation relay all in one sealed unit.

Update 5-25-2017:

I installed a system in a local owners 1985 Firebird on 5-21-2017. During and after this installation I found ways to do a better way of installing this system in the 82-86 Firebirds. So I'm trying toi find another local Firebird owner to come here so I can install a system again. If you are interested it is N/C.

I'm adding some pictures but many will change after the next installation. On this first installation we mounted the controller behind the front facia. This was OK because this Firebird is a dry weather/drag car. Even though the controller is potted it should not be in that area as it will probably get hit with water.  I think it can be mounted on the drivers side in the engine compartment hear the drivers front area. I believe all the wires that go to it are right there.

Overall it looks like the installation on a Firebird is fairly easy compared to a Fiero.

You first disconnect the battery:

Remove and cut the wires to the fender mounted relay:

All of these wires will be pulled out except the black ground wire. You solder a ring terminal on the black wire and screw it to the side wall. This applies to the 85-86 and possibly the 84. The early Firebirds have these relays on the headlight bucket and the installation will be different.

Remove and cut the wires to the isolation relay:

I believe all of these wires (except the black ground wire) can be pulled out of the wire loom back to the area where the box will be mounted. In the area next to the radiator on the drivers side. You will install a ring terminal on the black wire and screw it to the chassis where the isolation relay mounted.

You remove the steel shroud to get room to work on the headlight motor wiring etc.

First remove the brace:

Remove the top shroud:

Flip it back and over to get it out of the way:

You cut both pigtails off the headlight motors:

You will butt splice, solder and install adhesive lined shrink tube when you connect these to the new controller.

I'm skipping more than a few steps here because the installation will change from what we did. Here is where we mounted the new controller.

All the new wires are wrapped in new high temp convoluted tubing. On the next installation there will be a lot less new convoluted tube showing and the installation will look very close to factory.
